Pokmon TCG Revives Unova Region With Black Bolt White Flare Sets

Remember those late nights spent collecting Pokémon cards from the Unova region? That excitement and anticipation may have faded with time, but now the opportunity returns. The Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) is launching two new series—Black Bolt and White Flare—offering collectors and players a chance to relive those nostalgic moments.

For the first time, The Pokémon Company International (TPCi) is adopting Japan's release strategy by splitting the series into two simultaneous launches. This means collectors can complete their Unova Pokédex with all 156 Pokémon available across both sets. Each Pokémon will feature either an Illustration Rare or Special Illustration Rare card.

This synchronization suggests TPCi may be moving toward unified global release schedules. Even if full alignment isn't achieved, this approach provides clearer visibility into card contents and pricing structures.

Black Bolt and White Flare will launch worldwide on July 18, 2025, with tournament eligibility beginning August 1, 2025. As special series, they won't feature traditional booster packs but will be available through:

• Elite Trainer Boxes
• Booster Bundles
• Tins
• Various collector's sets

Both series exclusively feature fifth-generation Pokémon from the Unova region. Each set contains:

• Over 170 cards
• 65+ Illustration Rare cards
• 5+ Special Illustration Rare cards
• 5+ Pokémon ex cards

Notable Pokémon appearing in the sets include:

• Zekrom ex
• Reshiram ex
• Kyurem ex
• Meloetta ex
• Genesect ex
• Serperior ex
• Excadrill ex
• Hydreigon ex

The monochromatic Zekrom ex and Reshiram ex cards, featuring special foil textures, are already commanding prices up to $350 in Japanese versions. Other sought-after cards include Special Illustration Rare Trainer cards featuring characters like Hilda and N's Plot, commemorating iconic moments from Pokémon history.

Beyond collectibility, several cards offer strategic advantages:

• Air Balloon reprint: Provides battlefield mobility similar to Latias ex
• Genesect ex: Its "Metal Signal" ability synergizes with steel-type decks
• Zekrom ex: Offers new energy acceleration options with its Voltage Burst ability
